Mbombela – Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the death of a man who was believed to have been attacked and killed by an angry hippo in Hazyview on Valentine’s Day.
Hazyview police spokesperson Constable Duduzile Malibe said two men went to a place called Hippo Hollow to fish, but unfortunately one of them was attacked and killed on Sunday afternoon.
“The report shows that one man was walking in the front when he noticed the hippo. He then alerted the deceased, Lucas Mathebula, 38, that a hippo was coming very fast towards them and looked very angry. The deceased didn’t care much and said that he wanted to see it closer, while his friend escaped,” said Malibe.
It is believed that the hippo had just given birth and that it became aggressive because it was being protective.
Malibe explained that the men had entered a restricted area.
“There are signs that warn people not to pass through the area. We urge the locals to avoid illegal fishing in that area. There are always hippos outside the area,” she said.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
